About the National Museum of African American History & Culture

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington, D.C., is the only national museum devoted exclusively to documenting African American life, history, and culture.

Opened in 2016 on the National Mall, the museum houses over 40,000 artifacts and offers a deeply immersive journey through history, culture, and achievement.

History & Freedom

Visitors explore the transatlantic slave trade, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality in America.
